We have a 2000 42M schwing. The pipe doesnt line up at all. We were changing a gasket in the turret. it was the one going from the turret elbow to the staight pipe. When we took the clamp off the elbow moved over to the right 2-3in. is there anything we can do? the only thing i know to do is take all the pipe off and then put it all back on, and do the best to line it up. what do you guys think???

I forgot to mention that all the pipe does this. everytime you take a clamp off it seems like it springs out of place.

JT,

I am not sure if this will help you out any but I will share my experience. When I had to pull the turret and deck pipe I ran into a similar situation. My new friend was a come along. Works real well to put in a turret alone. Again to pull stuff together and be able to clamp it. I also use it to put on thoes 60 mm hydraulic hoses. They go on like a bare!

Good luck!

I can\'t tell you why it doesn\'t line up but I do know it happens on every pump I\' ve ever been unlucky enough to change pipe on.  I\'d bet my last buck that someone here can tell you why it happens.

What we always do is back off the next clamp or two in either direction to get enough play and then tighten the whole thing up.  A bit (or a lot) of hammering never hurt either.

One reason is that manufacturers make standard 90\'s instead of pieces for exact fit as would fit better but cost more and require special attention as all would not be the same. So to save a buck--we fight it.. Is it worth it?

Part of the problem might be where the elbows are attached rigidly to the boom.Take these bolts completly out and you may see a difference.

I was under the assumption that the first step was to make sure the elbows were centered with the swivel point of the boom. If they are out of center it will affect the rest when the boom is folded vs. unfolded. I\'ve always replaced pipe with the boom folded thats how they do it at the factory.

I knew if a guy that took his boom and opened it flat out. Then took every piece off and laid out the new pipe according to the specs. Started at the turret and by the time he got to the tip he was 4 inches of the tip elbow. To make it fit he strapped a come-a-long to a tree and stretched the pipe to fit.

I have never had to re pipe a whole boom but I have to assume it may be best to replace it one section at a time with the boom folded up?

Hey Guy\'s; Don\'t forget the grout that gets in between the pipes. Aren\'t the booms engineered for expansion here?? I\'ve always started at #1 on the main going out, left ALL bolts & clamps loose, until I got to the tip, then tightened EVERYTHING going back to the main! Then turrett to tail! I dunno, works for me!

Never take them all off, you\'ll be sorry. Start on the deck, and ONE at a time change them. We measure each one to make sure it is the correct length before we put it on.

It\'s possible that a make-up pipe in the past could be the wrong length. Also the deck pipe may have moved slightly over time while pumping.  Try leaving the ubolts on the deck pipe a little loose during a job . . . the pipe may slide back into place.  If there is that much tension on the pipes from being out of line; you are likely to find that you will have to change your swivel gaskets more often

steps for installation:  1 use all the same type of gaskets for joint seal. remember putz and schwing are different by about1/8 inch. after  20 joints you do the math the length error is pretty bad.

2 start at he lowest point on unit with fixed point mount. remember there are no slotted adjustments on the deck and on many turretts. work your way out to the tip of the boom with clamps slightly loose with boom folded.

the boom will distort due to its own weight when stretched out. can flex as much as 3".
