A CONSTRUCTION site in Mona Vale had to be shut down after a dramatic workplace accident yesterday.
Just before 11am a cement truck toppled on its side, narrowly missing nearby workers.
The giant truck was pumping cement into the Foley St site when it became unstable and tipped over.
The pump’s crane was the only thing that stopped the truck from completely rolling over.
However, as a result, the truck was precariously suspended in the air, just metres from the entrance to the Pittwater RSL.
No one was hurt in the incident but the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Engineering Union’s Tom Mitchell said the accident could have killed workers and passers-by.
“It could have fallen on the footpath and squashed people between the road and machinery,†he said.
Mr Mitchell made the decision to shut down the site and said the truck had not been set up, in terms of supports, as per the industry regulations.
“I hope a lot of builders learn from this as it is not the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. It is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.
“We have had a spate of these things lately so hopefully WorkCover will investigate it closely because it was a pretty close call.â€
WorkCover investigators were on site yesterday.
The development is for a multi-million dollar apartment block.

if all saftey procedures are followed and the machine fails then accidents could be avoided mr w but you cant seem to see that and that was my point. Excuses as to why a machine falls over are too late when some one is hurt or dead, regardless of whether or not the machine failed, especially when it can be avoided with 2 minutes of effort. I can accept a mistake when i make one and learn from it which is far better than some people. And its not a perfect world, not every body will get along, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. |
