If one looks close,the guy with radio looks right at cracking ground before it went over. |

Wonder why he doesn't just drop the load full speed when it started to crack up. But than again... Who expects it to give way this much. SCARY!!!! |

It's hard to tell on a video but it looks to me like a bad setup. They where to close to the edge. (like in the 1-2 rule) |

At 0.15 the radio men already looks at the crack that was the point they shoot have cleared the site and dropped the load |

Myself personally think the operator did some quick thinking to swing the boom out of the way of all the workers. Bad setup or not he had time to bail but chose to ride it out and get the boom someplace where it wouldn't kill someone. |

SUPERDOFFER | 12-15-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
Granddad: on a boom pump that is indeed the best thing you can do. On a crane however by turning with a load the pressure on the bad outriggers is increasing because of the counterweight |
||
Dipstick | 12-15-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
He wasn't swinging the boom any where. The weight of the counterweight is just pulling so hard it is making the boom swing. Even the brake can't hold that. |
||
Granddad | 12-16-2010 | reply profile send pm notify |
I agree with you on both points but have to disagree with you on the swing brake yes at some point the counterweight will take over but look closer at the operator and you can see his left hand trying to pull that joystick into his left knee. The machine was going over no matter what once that first rigger gave way. |

Swing brake and swing lock,both methods to hold the turntable.As in concrete pumps they can only hold so much,the swing lock dogs the turntable,however they can fail as well.One can hear the drums freewheel as it turned. Lessons learned,the 1 to 1 rule,spotter should have had load dropped RFN. |

Hey many. I hear more people here talk about a 1 to 1 rule. But isn't it a 1 to 2 rule? That's what it is here in europe at least. And what all the manufacturers prescribe.. 1 to 1 sounds like way to litlle to me. |

In part from the acpa NOTE! Measurement for the one-to-one rule shall be made from the edge of the outrigger pad nearest the excavation, and the distance from the edge should be increased if soil conditions appear unstable, if the jobsite authorities indicate the soil conditions are unstable, or if the manufacturer's recommendation is more restrictive. http://www.concretepumpers.com/pdfs/05002_outriggers.pdf Some good refresher reading.Although it appeared the crane was in complience,thought should hve been given to the fill.Most important is the cracking ground was evident to more than one person,it broke to the blind side of operator.The spotter with radio should have dropped the load post haste,not try to bring it back to the bank.Just might have saved his bacon. |

Strange that the rules vary so much than. It's quite a difference 1-1 or 1-2 I agree on the last thing you sayd. Should have droped the load in the river ASAP and it would most likely saved his ass. But like way to many the spotter was probbably thinking it would work out.. |

Been talking whit the crane boys in our comp. Turning whit the load was a very bad idea. The good thing of this video is that it can be used as a learning device. |
